Student Life Integration

Make democracy a part of student life.

Student Life allows for many opportunities to ask every student! Whether it is during their first interaction with your campus through programs like Welcome Week or Orientation, large gatherings like athletic events or festivals, or in more targeted and personal settings like student organization meetings, you can use these tools to facilitate high-impact, meaningful opportunities to ask every student to participate.

These resources can also be used for other large-scale programming, including parking or bus pass pick-up, lines for athletic events, and student organization meetings.

Institutionalized Voter Registration at New Student Orientation

Learn how to integrate voter registration into mandatory orientation programming, including how to break it up between sessions, facilitate it efficiently by including pre-work for pre-filled forms that just need to be signed, and get buy-in by sitting on the orientation committee.

This resource was created by Ashley Mercado from Stony Brook University as part of the 2022 Ask Every Student Codesigner Cohort.

Facilitate large-scale voter registration

Whether it’s through one-on-one conversations or small group sessions, you can use these resources to equip every student with the information they need to participate in our democracy, and register to vote if eligible.

    The Civic Engagement Packet

Use the Ask Every Student Civic Engagement Packet to streamline and simplify an inclusive process to register many students to vote, check for errors, and follow up with students as needed. Thanks to the Voto Latino Foundation, there is also a Spanish version of this packet linked in the resource.

"Voting as a Student 101" Presentations

This template presentation, designed for either in-person or virtual use, helps you meet students where they are at and address the questions that they are most likely to ask about participating in our democracy.

  • Pledge Cards

Pledge cards are a simple, inclusive, and highly effective way to track voter registrations and engagement, collect contact information for follow-up, and recruit more volunteers for your initiative.

  • Tracking Voter Registrations Guidance

Tracking the number of voter registrations you collect also allows you to assess your work and determine how to improve your efforts. This slide deck walks through guidance and suggested tools to track voter registrations on your campus. Additionally, whether through online portals or in-person, many voter registration tracking systems will also support follow-up with students who register to vote, which can provide them with information and support to actually cast their ballots, volunteer with your efforts, and attend future events you host.
